About UGC-NET

UGC-NET is a test to determine the eligibility of Indian nationals for ‘ Assistant Professor’ and ‘Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor ’ in Indian universities and colleges.

The selection of candidates for the following Fellowships of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and the Ministry of Minorities Affairs is also made through the UGC-NET:

 

  • National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste Students (NFSC)
  • National Fellowship for Other Backward Classes (NFOBC)
  • Maulana Azad National Fellowship for Minority Students (MANF)
  • Candidates aspiring for the Fellowships listed above, shall also have to apply for the Test.

    The University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET) is a bi-annual national-level Computer Based Test (CBT) conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). It determines eligibility for Assistant Professor positions, Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), and Ph.D. admissions in Indian universities. The exam features two papers—general and subject-specific—conducted in a single 3-hour session. 

    Key Aspects of UGC-NET

  • Purpose: Determines eligibility for 'Assistant Professor' and 'Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)'.
  • Conducting Body: NTA (National Testing Agency).
  • Frequency: Held twice annually, typically in June and December.
  • Mode: Computer-Based Test (CBT).
  • Structure:
  • Paper I (General): 50 multiple-choice questions (100 marks) testing teaching and research aptitude. Paper II (Subject-Specific): 100 multiple-choice questions (200 marks) based on the chosen subject. Duration: 3 hours (180 minutes) total, without breaks.
  • Eligibility: Master’s degree with at least 55% marks (50% for reserved categories).
  • Age Limit: No age limit for Assistant Professor; Maximum 30 years for JRF (with relaxation for certain categories).
  • Important Details

  • 85+ Subjects: Candidates can apply in any of the 85+ subjects offered.
  • Exam Fee & Application: Forms are filled online at the official NTA website.
  • Validity: JRF award letters are usually valid for 3 years, while eligibility for assistant professor is valid for life.
  • The exam covers subjects in the humanities, social sciences, computer science, and electronic science among others
