The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a premier national-level examination conducted jointly by IISc and seven IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Roorkee) on behalf of the Ministry of Education. It tests undergraduate engineering, technology, science, and humanities subjects for postgraduate admissions and PSU recruitment. 

Key Details About GATE Exam

  • Organizing Institute: The exam is conducted by different IITs on a rotation basis; IIT Roorkee is the organizing institute for 2025.
  • Purpose: Primarily used for admission to Master's (MTech) and Doctoral (PhD) programs with Ministry scholarships/assistantships.
  • PSU Recruitment: Several Public Sector Undertakings use the GATE score for hiring engineers in prestigious roles.
  • Exam Pattern: A Computer Based Test (CBT) featuring 30 test papers. Questions include Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), Multiple Select Questions (MSQ), and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.
  • Attempts: There is no restriction on the number of attempts.
  • Eligibility: Undergraduate students in their 3rd year or higher, or graduates in Engineering/Technology/Science/Architecture/Commerce/Arts. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee +8
  • Important Notes for GATE 2026

  • Admit Cards: Available for download on the GOAPS Portal.
  • Subjects: Candidates can choose to appear for one or two test papers.
  • Validity: The GATE scorecard is generally valid for three years.
  • Salary Expectations

    Qualified candidates joining PSU roles can expect a salary of around 1 to 2.5 lakh per month for Maharatna companies, with PG students from IITs/IISc getting around 13 LPA to 22.5 LPA.
